About Transmission and Distribution

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position Overview

The Grid Modernization Planning & Technology (GMP&T) Lab Operations Manager will manage and direct daily lab operations staff resources and direct cross-functional teams. These labs allow SCE to safely evaluate, test, and pilot new and emerging technologies that support SCE in complying with public policies such as modernizing the grid, providing clean energy, enabling customer choice, and integrating distributed resources. The labs also provide a means to test newer versions of existing technologies to support increased operating capabilities when replacing equipment that has reached the end of its lifecycle.

This position holds a broad area of responsibility as the work performed has major impacts on Company initiatives and involves multiple departments and business units. Functions include:

  • Manages highly technical staff with diverse experiences and responsibilities that have both operational and financial impacts to the success of the organization.

  • Provides team direction and guidance on day-to-day operational activities balanced with setting mid- and long-term strategic direction.

  • Conducts independent, in-depth analysis of complex business issues lacking a precedent to follow and provides recommendations to senior management and stakeholders.

  • Solves problems and establishes guidelines and procedures to ensure compliance, effectiveness, and efficiency.

  • Develops and implements business plans and objectives for the organization.

  • Makes decisions on key business activities associated with the labs that have a direct impact on the organization.

  • Communicates status and information to senior leadership and key stakeholders routinely, and influences decisions.

  • Assures that strategies and projects from senior leadership are carried out.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Engineering, or related field (e.g. Systems Management).

  • Must have a minimum of 5 years of supervisory and/or team leadership experience.

  • Must have a minimum 5 years of experience working as a project manager or on a project management team.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience with management of laboratory facilities/operations.

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering, Science, Business Administration or related field.

  • Experience leading large scale projects within cross-functional teams.

  • Experience working with electric utility power systems.

  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical and problem solving skills, including ability to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience.

  • Effective resource and project planning, decision making, results delivery, team building, and the ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

  • Strong ethics, influence and negotiation, leadership, interpersonal skills, communication, and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.

  • Project Management Certification

  • Position will require 25% travel between offices in SCE’s service territory.
