Description

Performs a variety of skilled and technical duties in the operation and maintenance of the City's wastewater treatment plants and lift stations. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform assigned treatment plant rounds to inspect, monitor and document plant operations by reading and interpreting information by the SCADA system, visual observations of tanks and tests, and other instrumentation.

  • Inspect, monitor and document remote facilities and lift stations; address or report abnormal conditions.

  • Operate, adjust, and maintain all pumps, valves, motors and other equipment required to maintain appropriate operations; receive and unload chemical deliveries.

  • Maintain, compile and update plant and remote facilities operation logs and reports; perform and record mathematical calculations related to plant operational activities. Must be able to communicate effectively as well as follow written and oral instructions.

  • Collect samples; perform a variety of routine wastewater quality laboratory tests for process control and regulatory compliance; complete associated documentation for sample collection and analysis; work closely with the laboratory on testing requirements.

  • Perform general plant facility maintenance such as cleaning and repairing plant facilities as required.

  • Ability to work weekends, overtime, regular days off or holidays as assigned or needed and carry on-call phone as required after initial training.

  • Respond to emergency alarms and calls as required.

  • Operate assigned equipment and vehicles.

  • Assist with snow removal as required, including operating snow blower and snow plow.

  • Accept a responsible role in implementing the safety culture of the department; adhere to safe work practices and procedures; review chemical MSD sheets. Must be able to demonstrate proper use of and use proper safety equipment, including respirator and self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and participate in required safety training. Correctly wear personal protective equipment for appropriate situations.

  • Utilize a variety of software applications such as Microsoft Office (Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, Word) XLIMs database, and erPortal work order tracking system; learn new software programs as they become introduced.

  • Ensure compliance with Federal, State and local laws, codes and regulations.

Experience & Education

Experience: Entry level position requiring strong organizational, analytical, teamwork, communication and mechanical skills. Previous team work experience with responsibilities preferred.

Education: High School Diploma/GED required. Wastewater treatment plant operation and or maintenance experience is preferred. Specialized education in mathematics, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, mechanics, hydraulics, computer technology, laboratory, or applied science is desirable.

Licenses and Certificates: Possession of or ability to obtain a Wastewater Class I Certification from the State of Kansas within 18 months. Class B CDL & DOT Physical with air brake and tanker license within 6 months.

Supplemental Information

Hours: M-F 7am-3:30pm

Rotating on-call and weekend shift every 4 to 6 weeks.

Must successfully pass a supplemental background check, DOT pre-employment physical and drug screen.
