The Windows Engineer – Release Management is a technical specialist within the CenturyLink Hosting Infrastructure Engineering Release Management (HIERM) team. This individual will be responsible for executing pre-approved software releases across the CenturyLink managed hosting environment, providing support and implementing operational fixes should any issues occur during any Release deployments. A Senior role within the Release Management team the position holder will act a as mentor for the team and will be required closely with customers and other internal parties alike to drive Server updates forward.
The candidate will ideally be an IT Graduate and be qualified to an MSCA/MCSE/MCITP level or possess a similar proven track record of experience.
The role requires that the successful applicant will work a shift pattern: Friday – Monday 10 hour shifts
Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field
Possesses one or more Microsoft professional certifications (MSCA/MCSE/MCITP) or equivalent proven experience in a technical support role.
Detailed knowledge of applying software releases in multi-server environment, with technology skills including but not limited to
Thorough understanding of Operating System patch management and execution across Windows environments
Experience installing standard and none standard applications in line with documented instructions
Previous experience and working knowledge in applying Firmware/Driver updates to physical interface cards on servers
Detailed working knowledge of Microsoft Operating Systems (Windows 2008/2012/2016)
Working knowledge of Active Directory, DNS and Microsoft Networking.
3+ years’ experience with VMware and virtual environments.
3+ years’ experience with one or more of the following technologies, Citrix, Microsoft SQL, ISA, Netbackup, SCCM,
Detailed knowledge and hands on experience with Microsoft Clusters
Possess strong analytical troubleshooting skills combined with excellent written and verbal communication skills
Be highly organized and able to work under pressure and time constraints
Be motivated and possess a ‘can do’ attitude with a proactive and energetic nature
ITIL V3 Foundation certification
5+ Years’ working knowledge of Linux (Red Hat) and Solaris operating system with understanding of the applications that each respective Operating System would support – including but not limited to apache, Oracle, MYSQL
5+ Years’ experience using Server Management architecture tools to deploy pre-defined updates – WSUS/HPSA/HPNA
5+ years’ experience of Operating System patch management and execution across Linux/Solaris/ESX environments
3+ years’ experience with Agile methodology
To execute software updates against an established supportability baseline, ensuring that contractual software update requirements are satisfied
Utilize experience and technical knowledge to update and maintain the software revisions across the managed server estate, this will include but is not limited to the following:
OS administration and support (including patching and managing) – Primary knowledge should be in Microsoft (2008/2012/2016) with an understanding of Linux (Red Hat 5/6/7) or Solaris
Agent Updates – HPSA, proprietary installs
Firmware/HP Support Pack updates
Own complex customer dedicated software update solutions to manage and maintain release schedules
Daily review of all open Release Management changes to progress upfront validations ensuring that all Changes are progressed in line with customer expectations
To follow, and where applicable assist in reviewing current processes and creation of new standardized Release Management processes that can be used to apply software updates to servers
Working in conjunction with the scheduling team, ensure clients are kept up to date regarding the relative success/failure of the Release Management activities – ensuring all activities are logged in the Change Management system
Adhere to all overlapping CenturyLink processes when executing updates via Release Management
Assist in mentoring Associate Release Engineers
Escalating issues to the relevant Engineering team as required, promptly following procedures and ensuring management is updated accordingly on issues occurring during the weekend shift.
Assist in resolving support issues; 90% of which will be resolved without escalation
Escalation of critical issues/outages to Hosting Compute Management as per procedures.
