Job Description

Spire is seeking a Senior Accountant, Operational Accounting to work in the St. Louis, Missouri office. This position will be responsible for generating and reviewing journal entries and for accurate and timely financial data and financial statements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepare and post journal entries, as well as prepare and manage documentation supporting the journal entries

  • Employ ownership of individually assigned accounts, including preparation of accounts analyses and/or reconciliations

  • Coordinate with other departments to analyze and review various inputs to the monthly close process to confirm quality and accuracy of the process

  • Seek out opportunities and implement changes for process improvements

  • Assist in preparation and review of financial information for quarterly and annual reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)

  • Take ownership of revenue and/or natural gas cost process, as necessary, including preparation of unbilled revenue calculation

  • Assist in preparation of annual revenue/gas cost budget and monthly updates to forecast of contribution margin

  • Provide information for the FERC Form2 for the Public Service Commission annual report

  • Prepare, review, and distribute monthly variance analytics to key leadership members, including but not limited to CFO, COO, and Controller

  • Understand drivers behind changes in contribution margin

  • Manage statuses of expense project and tasks to capture costs at detailed level as needed

  • Gain a solid understanding of tariffs and the overall regulatory accounting environment

  • Support and assist regulatory environment with PGA, ACA, ISRS, and general rate filings as necessary

  • Respond to questions and requests from internal and external auditors

  • Assist in training and guiding of less experienced team members

  • Work on special projects and ad hoc requests

Required Skills

Required Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar degree

Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities

  • 2-3 years’ relevant experience

  • Strong, detailed knowledge of US GAAP

  • Knowledge of FERC accounting requirements, preferred

  • Knowledge of company specific regulatory filings, preferred

  • Knowledge of the Oracle financial system, preferred

  • Previous experience working with enterprise wide applications strongly preferred i.e. Customer Care & Billing, Business Intelligence, Oracle/SAP, Hyperion Suite, Work Order Management System, and/or Powerplan
