Job Description

This position is currently 3 crew (7.5 hrs) with intent to move to a 4 crew (12 hrs) shift.

Primary Function

  • The primary function of this job is to operate the balers, load out by-product bales and maintain a safe and clean environment. This person will provide direction, assist and work closely with the Hoist Operators, including operating balers and hoggers as needed to maximize production. This person works closely with the other Materials Department personnel and requires cross training in roll storage.

Communicate with the Hoist Operator at the beginning of each shift about production, maintenance and housekeeping and during the shift as needed to maintain smooth work flow.

  • Provide training for baler room functions and baler operation

  • Operate and maintain balers

  • Weigh and stack bales

  • Maintain documentation of inventory

  • Inspect and repair ductwork and clean out doors located on roof

  • Hog press run waste

  • Hog bindery run waste

  • Hog kill stock

  • Assist in removing any by-product clogs and needed clean up

  • Assist Hoist Operator to remove copper from SCM

  • Assist Hoist Operator to remove add-a-card scrap from 860

  • Assist Hoist Operator to remove roll wrappers from press – make bales

  • Assist Hoist Operator to remove white waste bales from press

  • Assist Hoist Operator to pick up spoilage carts from presses

  • Order and load trucks and or rail cars with bales and cores as needed while communicating with Coordinator

  • Perform rail car switches

  • Perform maintenance / lubrication

  • Perform housekeeping duties

  • Adhere to and promote all safety policies and procedures including, but not limited to the proper handling of hazardous waste, lock out-tag out rules and hearing and eye protection policies

  • Perform routine daily inspection on hoist and assures maintenance needs are reported. May include battery service duties such as inspecting, recharging and replacing batteries, checking fluid levels, cleaning electrical leads and battery poles and lubricating moving parts.

  • Complete daily logbook to insure communication from shift to shift and for Coordinator and Supervisor information gathering

  • Perform other duties and participate in special projects as assigned by supervisor

Previous forklift experience is required

Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor; i.e., cross-training, remove shavings from roof and other projects.

Work environment - hot/dusty

Must be able to work weekend and weekday overtime and also work rotating shifts.

Ability to communicate effectively with others and to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

Ability to walk and stand for up to 11.5 work shifts with periodic breaks.

Ability to exert 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and.or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move object.

Ability to use vision to identify product defects.

Ability to perform the key responsibilities of this position with or without reasonable accomodations.

Required Experience

Previous forklift experience is required with preference of at least 1-2 years experience. Must obtain certification through LSC Communications.

Good mechanical skills preferred.

Previous experience operating bale squeeze, roll grab, trackmobile preferred.
