Job Description

This Equipment Operator Senior will be assigned to the Sioux City Leeds maintenance garage. In addition to performing the duties of a Highway Technician Associate and crew leader, this person will function as a member of the leadership team for the Sioux City Maintenance circles and report directly to the Highway Maintenance Supervisor for that area. As a member of the leadership team, this person will assist the Highway Maintenance Supervisor and Garage Operations Assistant in the coordination of assigned personnel and resources to efficiently and effectively carry out maintenance activities in the Sioux City garages. A working knowledge of maintenance procedures and the ability to facilitate and train Highway Technician Associates is necessary. Applicants for this position must be available to respond to emergency situations 24 hours a day. The person in this position will be expected to be active in informing the Highway Maintenance Supervisor of any personnel issues.

This position performs highway maintenance activities and operates highway maintenance equipment. The employee may also perform construction and materials inspection duties as assigned. These duties require the ability to work outdoors during inclement weather and to understand and follow written and oral instructions.

Lifting: Ability to perform heavy work, occasionally (1-33% of the time) lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling various items/using force from 50 - 100 lbs. Team lift or mechanical assist recommended for weights over 75 lbs.

CDL: Must possess a valid Commercial Learner's Permit upon hire. Within 14 calendar days following appointment, a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License with the required endorsements and applicable restrictions must be obtained and maintained in order to continue employment. Requires a pre-employment drug screen and will require ongoing participation in the employer's random drug and alcohol testing program and will be subject to the regulations regarding the Federal drug and alcohol testing program.

Herbicide: Within a period of time as determined by the appointing authority, will be required to have and maintain a current Herbicide Applicator certification.

Additional Requirements:

  • Post offer, pre-employment physical.

  • Within 5 months of appointment, must reside within 30 minutes driving time, during normal conditions, from assigned work location.

  • Must respond to emergency situations as required.

  • Must be able to work up to 16 consecutive hours.

  • Some overnight travel may be required.

Shift: Days; subject to call 24 hours day during emergency conditions.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Graduation from high school, or G.E.D. and two years of full-time highway maintenance and equipment operation work;


an equivalent combination of education and experience substituting one year (thirty semester hours) of accredited post high school education in construction technology/management, or engineering for each year of the required experience;


employees withcurrentcontinuous experience in the State Executive Branch that includes eighteen months of full-time work as a Highway Technician Associate.
