The Operating Room Staff Nurse in the Nursing and Patient Care Services is located at the main hospital in La Jolla. The Operating Room Staff Nurse is a professional registered nurse who is responsible for the evidence-based care of a group of patients and who utilizes the Nursing Process to:
demonstrate leadership in providing a safe and supportive environment for patients, staff and others
use & direct others to use equipment safely and appropriately
provide care that incorporates the age, gender, cultural and learning needs of patients requiring complex planning and evaluation of care
apply and direct others to apply infection control measures appropriately in delivering care
collaborate with others to identify, analyze and resolve problems affecting care
identify potential problems involving resources and/or safety and takes action to ensure patient safety and a therapeutic environment
adhere to ethical principles and nursing standards in delivering care
demonstrate leadership in unit-level quality improvement activities
apply knowledge and skill core competencies of the assigned unit to patient care
effective communication skills with individuals & groups to achieve desired patient outcomes demonstrate all mandatory organizational and clinical competencies of the position.
Work Schedule:Full time permanent, 40 hours per week, this position is rotating shifts to cover hours of operation from 0700-1930, 8 hour shifts, Overtime/Weekend/Holiday work may be required to meet patient care needs. On Call is required. Specific working hours will be discussed during the interview.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (http://www.acenursing.org/) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (http://www.aacn.nche.edu/). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
*Grade Determinations: *
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN or Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; [If MSN obtained in a Bridge Program, no BSN is required.] OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience.

Preferred Experience: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or enroll in BSN/Bridge program; minimum of 2 years of current Operating Room experience in both scrubbing and circulating complex cases; Ortho total joints and robotics, spine fusion, neurosurgery, Cardiac Surgery procedures (CABG's & Valves). BLS, ACLS, and CCI Specialty certification under CNOR preferred.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Requirements: Heavy Lifting and Carrying (45 lbs and over); Straight Pulling, Pushing, Walking, Standing, Kneeling, Repeated bending, Keyboarding, Viewing computer screen (8 - 12 hours); Reaching above shoulder; Use of fingers; Both hands and legs required; Ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; Near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; Far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other; Depth perception; Ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; Hearing (aid permitted); and Emotional/Mental stability.
