Job Purpose

  • Engineers provide system support, maintenance and operational assistance for all the Ericsson Salford operation. Engineers are responsible for liaising directly with the customer, assuming ownership of issues through to resolution, carrying out the diagnosis and solving of all technical issues, escalating to Senior Engineers or other senior members of the team in order to achieve this.

  • Engineers provide monitoring and management of circuits between Ericsson Broadcast and Media Services (EBMS) and their Third Party providers for contribution and distribution circuits, through both facility line and Satellite facilities.

  • The Engineer will be required to prioritise their work and ensure a professional approach is presented at all times, especially when under operational pressure.

  • Engineers will be expected to maintain a minimum level of competency, continually focusing on their development on all systems, technologies and operational processes, establishing themselves as a point of reference on specific systems over a reasonable time.

  • They will be required to provide support to their team and will need to work to an agreed shift rota which includes nights, weekends and public holidays.

  • Excellent communication and problem solving skills are required, as is the ability to understand and work to agreed Service Level Agreements (SLA’s) delivering a professional service.

  • To work within Service Management based processes, continually striving to improve their performance and the team’s.

Key Accountabilities

Technical Work:

  • Ensure performance specifications are met and maintain the technical standards and parameters of the equipment and systems within their care. This will include ensuring that approved change controlled modifications are carried out as required

  • Prioritise work, seeking guidance from the Senior Engineer during demanding times

  • To maintain comprehensive records and logs of work done using incident management tool, on the installation, modification and repair of systems, following appropriate change control for all non break/fix planned work

  • To carry out routine maintenance work as defined and agreed with the Senior Engineer

  • To critically assess technical quality and performance, extracting and analysing system logs where available or escalating to Senior Engineers to progress where necessary

  • To clarify trends and escalate to Senior Engineers, proactively engaging Principal Engineers to achieve solutions

  • Identify potential system failures and weaknesses and proactively advise Senior Engineers or Principals of these, giving recommendation for course of action

  • Responsible for ensuring technical delivery and acceptable quality for:

  • transmitted MPEG multiplexed signals
  • incoming and outgoing video and audio quality and levels;
  • time-delayed Linear Services; and
  • Conditional access Encryption levels where appropriate (DTT/DSAT);
  • Streaming Services;
  • Interactive Services;
  • signaling data (e.g. aspect ratio information);
  • Data services;
  • Access Services on specified Linear Services; (Subtitle, AD monitoring, Signing);

  • Liaise with 3rd Parties over contribution issues and live/amended deliveries, ensuring agreed media delivery format is adhered to

  • Line up and prepare outside sources for transmission and record feeds

  • Set up communication 4 wire circuits via ISDN to enable Playout cueing

  • Manage satellite down linking using local satellite receivers and steerable dishes

  • Liaise with Playout to confirm talkback and OB contributions, and urgent playout issues

  • Carry out acceptance testing on new and refurbished equipment as directed and ensure that the performance of such equipment meets stated specifications. Liaise with Senior, Principal Engineers, or 3rd party suppliers and manufacturers as necessary to achieve this

  • Devise ways of achieving the needs of the operation by means of technical innovation and development

  • Carry out Risk Assessments, Method Statements, COSHH analysis, Portable Appliance testing, MDU maintenance, Manual Handling and operation of standard and non standard equipment

  • Carry out occasional soldering work, ensuring quality of work

  • At times provide operational cover for operational roles such as Playout Director and Media Management

Person Specification

Experience and Knowledge

  • Good interpersonal skills with the ability to liaise effectively with different levels and audiences
  • The ability to use and update formalised knowledge management systems
  • Ability to organise and prioritise their work ensuring deadlines are met
  • Experience of a large, structured, broadcast environment, with an understanding of transmission automations systems, video servers and media management operations
  • Degree in a technical related subject or equivalent experience in this field
  • Experience of working in a MCR
  • Broadcast and Electronic Engineering fundamentals
  • A good understanding of databases and network technologies
  • Knowledge and experience of Windows and Linux operating systems
  • Knowledge of broadcast video formats, protocols, and encoding standards
  • Understanding of the workflows and methodologies of Digital Asset Management
  • Audio / video equipment, editing and production systems
