Overview:

Under minimal supervision, conducts on-the-job training for Coach Operators with a focus on customer service, safety, courtesy, and reliability.

This position is not eligible for employee benefits. The work schedule consists of two or three 8-hour days per week, for three weeks out of every four weeks, not to exceed 1,000 hours within a continuous 12 month period.

This position is non-exempt in Salary Grade M: Min $25.59– Mid $31.72 – Max $37.84 per hour. The starting salary will be within this range based on qualifications.

• Updates Operations Training management on performance of students. Makes recommendations for completion of training, additional training, or termination.

• Reviews training progress with students, keeping students on task. Coaches and counsels students who do not perform to standards.

• Trains Coach Operators who assist in the behind-the-wheel and classroom training of new students.

• Conducts pre-trip, skills, and road training for bus operations and maintenance personnel.

• Evaluates, coaches, and reports coach operators work performance.

Knowledge of:

• Policies, procedures, and specific rules of operations.

• Commercial vehicles and auxiliary equipment.

• California Vehicle Code, California CDL Handbook, and Title 13 of the Federal Register.

• Adult training methods and principles.

• Computer applications and software.

• Recordkeeping techniques and procedures.

• English usage, grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

Ability to:

• Operate commercial vehicles and equipment, specifically 40 or 60 foot (transit) bus vehicles.

• Maintain a valid commercial driver license, medical certificate, and license certificates.

• Understand, interpret, and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and Coach Operator Collective Bargaining Agreement.

• Maintain confidentiality.

• Write clear and concise letters and memos.

• Communicate and interact through mutual respect with trainees, subordinates, peers, co-workers, supervisors, and managers.

• Convey the Division's shared goals.

• Share knowledge both internally and externally relating to Operations Training.

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school diploma and a minimum of approximately four years of experience which includes experience conducting adult learner training, and experience in transit operations, preferably within a fixed route system.

Special Qualifications:

Valid California commercial driver license (Class A or B with passenger endorsement) and current medical card.

Valid certifications in the TSI Instructors Course in Bus/Paratransit Operator Training and Verification of Transit Training is preferred.

Positions in this job classification are considered safety sensitive and are subject to drug and alcohol testing, including but not limited to pre-employment testing, post-accident testing and random testing, under Federal Transportation Administration (FTA) drug and alcohol regulations, and U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, 49 CFR Part 40 and Part 655.
