Green Plains Inc. is a publicly traded Fortune 1000, diversified commodity processing business with agribusiness, ethanol production, cattle feed lot operations, commodity marketing, and distribution services. We are a growth company, recently expanding grain storage facilities, ethanol production and fueling terminal distribution businesses.

Green Plains Cattle Company has an immediate opening for an Operations Manager. This position will be located in the Garden City, Kansas area.

Summary: To manage and coordinate directives of the VP Cattle, through effective communication to Feedyard Managers, the activities involved in feedlot operations in order to meet established productivity and profitability objectives.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities may include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Develops, monitors, and is accountable to, the feedlot operating and capital expense budgets in relations to immediate needs and five year plan.

  • Ability to create and maintain operating budgets and show results.

  • Recruiting talent/building bench strength.

  • Assist VP with Leadership Training.

  • Develops and leads Feedyard staff (KPI’s).

  • Oversee Vet & Nutritionist operations.

  • Assist VP with Pharmaceutical Negotiations & other Vendor relations

  • Assist cattle buyers through observation of new cattle arrivals and feedback communication.

  • Assist VP with grid negotiations.

  • Ability to travel & spend multiple nights away from home.

  • Monitor the completion and maintaining of accurate records at all facilities.

  • Work closely with EHSS to ensure that records, activities and required reporting are maintained to comply with environmental safety and regulatory issues.

  • With assistance of EHSS, educate and promote a safe work environment.

  • Ensures that day-to-day yard activities are carried out in an efficient manner through personal observations and meetings (formal/informal) with appropriate yard management and employees.

  • Ensures that supervisors and consultants are directed toward performance goals.

  • Works closely with the Feedyard Manager on current and future purchasing requirements and parameters.

  • Represent Green Plains Cattle Company at state & national events.

  • Assist VP in evaluating Feedyard Managers.

  • Assists in the development and/or improvement of future and existing feedlot operations and procedures.

Requirements

Minimum Experience and Education:

Typically requires 5 to 10 years of successful experience in feedlot operations, including some supervisory or management experience. A good understanding of OSHA/HACCP guidelines is needed as well as an understanding of the cattle accounting system. Excellent communication and leadership skills required. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) skills are a plus; must be computer literate.

  • Language Ability: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

  • Math Ability: Ability to perform basic math functions and calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, etc.

  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

  • Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Word Processing software, Spreadsheet software, Accounting software, and Internet software. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
