Job Description

Position will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and heavy manual labor while conducting roadway maintenance activities. Equipment operations include but are not limited to backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Positions perform emergency roadway operations and must be willing to work outside normal work hours in emergencies. Additional vacancies may be filled in Amherst, Nelson, and Campbell Counties.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of roadway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures. Demonstrated experience operating dump trucks and other light/medium/heavy-duty equipment and performing preventive maintenance. Knowledge of safety policies, procedures and programs. Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of a valid CDL and DOT medical card. Experience in roadway maintenance or construction. High school graduate or GED preferred; equivalent experience or training may substitute for education.

Special Requirements

A valid driver’s license, approved safety shoes and frequent daily travel are required. Must be able to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment. Must be able to obtain first aid, CPR, flagging and work zone safety certifications within a reasonable period of employment. Ability to perform heavy manual labor to include standing, bending and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to work in diverse conditions including exposure to weather, animals and/or insects, outdoors and in all seasons. Fingerprint-based criminal history record check, references, work history and DMV driving records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions. Applicants selected for interview will be required to perform a skills demonstration as part of the interview process.
