Job Description

Job Summary:

The Dir, Lab Operations (Metro) leads the development and implementation of policies, procedures and strategies for a laboratory.


  • Directs and establishes policies, procedures and protocols.

  • Manages financial operations of the lab including expense and revenue analysis, evaluation of lab services and development activities.

  • Plans, organizes and directs all activities related to staffing which may include hiring, orienting, evaluating, disciplinary actions and continuing education initiatives.

  • Determines and justifies needs for equipment purchases, adheres to policies regarding equipment purchases, monitors equipment installations and oversees proper working order of equipment.

  • Ensures lab operations support the various hospital initiatives and meet/exceed all certification requirements (CAP, CLIA, AABB, etc.).

  • Responsible for supporting standardization of policies and protocols where possible across LabPlus, LLC.

  • Responsible for managing system laboratory departments (i.e. microbiology, blood bank, etc.) in such as manner as to support the needs of the hospitals, providers and patients.

  • Collaborates with and supports the other directors and Executive Director of LabPlus to ensure successful laboratory operations across the system through standardization and consolidation where possible.

  • Monitors installations of new equipment, oversees all staff training, creation of related policies and protocols, performance and documentation of all validations and correlations and manages provider/laboratory notification of related assay/protocol changes.

  • Ensures adequate and appropriate staffing for consistent laboratory operations. Ensures lab leadership (direct reports) are appropriately educated and capable of performing their leadership/technical duties.

  • Monitors overall supply usage and inventory levels to remain within budget or better and identifies/implements cost containment initiatives. Identifies, initiates and/or monitors performance improvement projects to ensure successful completion and hardwiring of any changes/fixes for consistent and long term results.

  • Required Credential(s):

  • Licensed Medical Laboratory Supervisor credentialed from the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Boardobtained within 6 Months (180 days) of hire date or job transfer date.

  • Licensed Medical Laboratory Scientist credentialed from the Tennessee Medical Laboratory Board obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date.


  • Bachelor's Level Degree

  • ​Bachelor's degree required

  • Master's degree preferred

Work Experience:

  • Five years in a lab environment and a minimum of three years in lab operations at a leadership level required.
