Job Description

The Salem District is seeking an Operator for the Structure and Bridge Section in the Montgomery County area to perform preventative and restorative structural maintenance activities to bridges and other structures. District is seeking qualified individuals to perform preventative and restorative highway/bridge activities on a Salem District Bridge Crew. The current vacancy is located at the Ironto location. This recruitment may be also be used to fill future vacancies at Christiansburg, Bedford, Hillsville, Martinsville, and Salem locations. This position works as part of a crew to repair and maintain bridges and other structures. Performs manual labor to include formation of footers, abutments and wing walls, place and finish concrete, erect steel beam bridges and install timber and concrete bridge decks.

Position requires ability to operate a 3-ton dump truck, rubber tire front end loader, backhoes and various types of hand/power tools. Applicants should have demonstrated experience in preventative maintenance and minor repairs on equipment/tools; ability to flag traffic, set up work zones and traffic controls; and perform physically demanding labor over, in and around water from boats and scaffolding at various heights and in harsh weather conditions.

Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee during snow/severe weather events and other emergency events; must be willing to work outside of normal work hours during emergency conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of highway and bridge maintenance methods, equipment, materials and safety practices. Ability to perform minor repairs and preventative maintenance on equipment and tools. Ability to perform heavy manual labor. Ability to perform mathematical calculations to measure and lay out constructed elements on bridges and culverts. Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 6 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. Ability to work at heights, over and, or in water, in heavy traffic and under other adverse conditions. Skill in carpentry, concrete forming and finishing, and welding. Skill in operation and use of light and medium-duty equipment, as well as in the use of hand and power tools. Safety shoes required.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with maintenance of highway bridges or structures. Experience in carpentry, building forms and false works, concrete placement and finishing, or fabricating/welding steel components preferred. Flagger certification preferred. Valid CDL or CDL Learners with related endorsements.

Special Requirements

Additional vacancies may be filled from this recruitment. Frequently required heavy manual labor to include standing, bending, and frequent lifting up to 50 lbs. Ability to obtain flagger and work zone certifications. References, work history, and DMV records will be verified. Selected applicant must complete a pre-employment physical and drug screening. Requires approved safety shoes. Will be required to work outside normal hours in emergencies, inclement weather, and heavy traffic conditions. Work schedules may vary according to job assignments to include night work, weekends, and holidays.
