Summary:

This position is responsible for developing and directing the enterprise`s overall strategy for Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Corporate Risk Management, and business continuity planning. Directs the corporate activity to evaluate strategic, financial, operational, and governance risks; and balance risk and reward in order to maximize the return to stakeholders. Responsible for developing the enterprise common risk measure and strategy to cascade the enterprise measure down to individual risks and companies. Responsible for communicating risks, risk measures, tolerance levels, and exceptions to all levels of management. Oversees the enterprise-wide development and implementation of strategies to effectively mitigate or minimize the impact of internal and external threats that could result in a crisis, unplanned disruption or disaster. Also responsible for divisional planning and internal controls.

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of risk management.

  • Extensive knowledge and understanding of insurance and/or reinsurance industry, regulatory constraints, judicial climate and consumer activism.

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of business continuity planning techniques and methodologies.

  • Solid knowledge and understanding of profitability, growth and risk concepts.

Additional Job Information:

An upcoming project will be to implement a new governance risk and compliance tool, so prior experience leading a team through a technology and process change would be a plus.

Risk Management experience and/or certifications preferred.

Job Description:

Enterprise & Corporate Risk Management

  • Oversees the development and maintenance of the ERM Strategy.

  • Oversees the ERM department activities and processes in order to identify, assess, quantify, monitor, and address risk exposures within and across all areas of the organization.

  • Oversees the ERM department activities and processes to ensure that risk assessments planned and assigned address the most significant risks and provide sufficient coverage of the risk universe.

  • Facilitates the ERM reporting strategy so all levels of management are aware of our key risks, their measures, tolerance levels and exceptions. All levels of management include the Board of Directors, the Audit Committee of the Board, Officers, and department/unit management teams, as well as external reporting on risk to our rating agencies and regulators.

  • Ensures the organizations actions are consistent with the identified risk appetite to improve corporate strategy planning and execution. Reduces unexpected results from the organization on a whole.

  • Directs the corporate, financial and operational risk assessment and response functions in order to improve the organization`s capacity to deal with uncertainty, associated risks and opportunities and build policyholder value.

  • Manages direct reports, systems, and projects to achieve unit goals in accordance with Company policies and practices.

  • Prepares and analyzes unit plans and reports.

  • Provides leadership by exhibiting influence and expertise, thus affecting the results of the operating area.

  • Creates an effective work environment by developing a common vision, setting clear objectives, expecting teamwork, recognizing outstanding performance, and maintaining open communications.

  • Develops staff through coaching, providing performance feedback, providing effective performance assessments, and establishing performance & development plans.

  • Establishes, communicates, and implements departmental plans, objectives, and strategies.

  • Participates as a member of the Management Team.

  • Maintains an active awareness of American Family's business environments, corporate culture, and structure to support key decision-making.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with counterparts within the company, other companies in the industry, professional groups and work committees.

  • Develops strategic relationships with all divisions.

  • Communicates significant compliance risks to PC Loss Reserving Vice President and Corporate Compliance Director.

Divisional Planning

  • Coordinates the divisional business and operational planning processes.

  • Communicates divisional plans and performance within and outside the division

  • Implements divisional metrics and produces periodic reports to track actual versus planned results.

  • Represents division on companywide planning and administration director group.

  • Oversees and coordinates the division's business continuity plan.
