Position Description Performs skilled work of the journeyman/tradesman level in the operation and maintenance of equipment in a central heating and cooling plant. Responsibilities involve the efficient operation and maintenance of all utility equipment in the central heating and cooling plant. Work is performed under general supervision with evaluation based on periodic inspection of charts and records concerning operating efficiency and observation of the quality of utility services rendered.
Major/Essential Functions Training to learn the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of the equipment in a heating and cooling plant and for maintaining an uninterrupted supply of utility services to the campus, Health Sciences Center, University medical Center, and University facilities.
This is an Essential Personnel position and will be subject to call during off hours.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be able to pass technical pre-employment exam.
Must be able to understand, remember, and follow verbal and written instructions.
Must be competent in writing skills; must be competent at basic mathematical operations; and be able to verbally communicate effectively.
Must be able to show mechanical aptitude (machines, engines, HVAC, boilers, etc.). Operates and maintains boilers, steam turbines, refrigeration chillers, and all supporting equipment and associated systems.
Required Qualifications High school or equivalency, and competency in written and mathematical skills. Academic performance, job experience, or advanced training or education that indicates the employee will be able to complete the Personnel Qualification System. Background and experience indicating a mechanical aptitude. Knowledge of hand tools, occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
