Job Summary:

Works under the supervision of the Telecommunications Coordinator. Responsible for the operation of the Medical Center's main switchboard, In-house paging system and serves as an information center assisting patients, physicians, visitors, clergy and salesman. Also acts as the controlling and alerting station for Medical Center alarms and emergencies. Position will access Information via a personal computer and will perform various clerical and miscellaneous tasks as assigned. The Incumbent of this position must acquire a broad knowledge of the Medical Center, to the extent they may accurately direct all calls and/or persons coming Into the Medical Center, to the proper area.

Essential Duties:

  • Promptly and courteously answers incoming telephone calls and places long distance calls when authorized and requested to do so.

  • Responds calmly and quickly to Medical Center alarms and emergencies.

  • Operates in-house paging system for personnel notification.

  • Acts as an information center receptionist for patients, physicians, visitors, Clergy and salesmen, etc. Uses a personal computer to access patient information and attendant telephone directory. Also does limited updating of patient or physician information upon request.

  • Operates MedicalCenter communications equipment in a quick and timely manner, including IBM 9755 Attendant Console, in order to be of prompt service to Medical Center patients, physicians and guests.

  • Customer Service:

  • Receives, greets and directs patients, family members, clients, visitors and physicians in a positive and conscientious manner adhering to our Embrace the Spirit standards and behaviors. Problem-solve, offer and give assistance as needed.

  • Acknowledging internal and external customers with eye contact and a smile.

  • Phones are answered promptly with a friendly voice using a proper greeting.

  • Ability to prioritize, organize and effectively handle multiple tasks and interruptions in a positive manner.

  • Book live interpreters for LED and deaf or hard of hearing patients following protocol and procedures outlined in SERMC policies.

Hours: 0.6FTe, 48 hours in 2 weeks - Night Shift



High school diploma or equivalent.




  • PBX experience preferred but not required. Position requires close attention to work, including quick response to alarms and emergencies. Experience in public contact work desirable. Must have excellent people skills and like to work with and around people. Contacts with others which requires good communications skills, a high degree of tact and judgment. Must present oneself as a professional and have a pleasing voice.

  • A telephone in the residence is required.
