Role Summary

The Associate Director Operations is responsible for the overall operations within the Kelberg, Germany facility and the project management and installation of customer projects globally. This role influences over USD $150M of revenues, and has an annual operating budget of over US$50M.

The Associate Director Operations is responsible for leading an organization of around 200 associates, with a flexible workforce of around 10-20. This role will direct and coordinate all aspects of the operations for the site including but not limited to production, procurement, customer project management, onsite installations, employee relations, materials management, shipping, and to a limited extent government and public relations regarding plant operations.

The Associate Director Operations will serve as the Operations representative on the Rowa platform leadership team. With a dotted reporting to the BD MMS Vice President Operations, he/she will be responsible for developing an effective and forward-looking Operations/Manufacturing strategy that supports and enables the business strategy of fast growth with reduced costs. One of the key expectations from the Associate Director Operations will be to lead the adaption of continuous innovation in the product line in high growth environment, through Continuous Improvement, building capabilities and adoption of appropriate systems and processes.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Run the plant operations of a high growth business (15% CAGR over last 5 years), ensuring safety, quality, service level delivery, and cost parameters are met and continuously improved upon.

  • Develops and periodically revises as necessary, an effective Operations/Manufacturing strategy that supports and enables the business strategy and aligns with BDX operational strategies. Evaluates and recommends approach on make vs buy options, alternative supply sources, and ensures adequate space and capacity exists to fully support projected demand.

  • Develops a multi-year roadmap to implement the operations strategy and establishes yearly operational objectives.

  • Provides direct leadership and management for 7 roles - Manufacturing Manager (Production, CI, Manufacturing Engineering), Integrated Supply Chain Manager (Procurement, Planning, Inventory Management and Shipping), External Supply Chain Manager, Project Management & Installations Manager, EH&S Manager, Mobility/Fleet and Facilities. The role is also responsible for effectively working with and across various functions (e.g. R&D, Quality, Finance, and HR) at the site, ensuring that overall operational objectives are achieved in addition to specific functional goals and objectives.

  • Oversee the development of annual operating and capital budgets which are aligned with and are in support of overall business objectives and requirements.

  • Evaluate and ensure appropriate staffing needs are addressed to enable support for all business and functional objectives. Surface /resolve any staffing issues with appropriate business and functional leadership.

  • Establishes effective development and succession plans for the Operations organization.

  • Establishes and drives processes to ensure the safety of our associates, protection of the physical assets and compliance with Environmental, Health and Safety policies and regulations

  • In conjunction with local functional leadership (Finance, HR, Quality), ensures that applicable functional and unit systems, policies, and procedures are effectively introduced and adhered to within the local site.

  • Establish and drive significant Continuous Improvement initiatives throughout the site, implement the BD Continuous Improvement Operating System and effectively apply tools such as Six Sigma and Lean to deliver sustainable outcomes.

  • Create a culture of action and accountability, empowering associates with necessary tools and data to successfully perform their roles, and ensure rewards and recognition for associates and teams as appropriate. Effectively lead by example and establish proper “tone at the top”.

  • Lead the plant in its ongoing effective immersion into BD and adoption of appropriate systems and processes that are applicable to the site.

  • Effectively represents BD Rowa with the local associates on HR matters, ensuring that solutions are developed which achieve needed business outcomes while also ensuring that BD Rowa is viewed as a good corporate citizen within the area.

  • Collaborates with all business functions to ensure effective new product development, technology transfer, introduction into manufacturing, launch, support and commercial success.

Knowledge / Skills

The ideal candidate will possess the following skills and expertise:

  • Strong manufacturing experience (ideally with complex capital instrument manufacturing) with demonstrated skill in managing the necessary cross functional interactions (some direct report and some indirect) that are essential for site success, including a ‘dynamic’ supply chain (rapid response to unpredictable demand conditions).

  • Proven Leadership skills which can simultaneously create a culture of accountability and action within an empowered and motivating, positive team environment where quality and efficiency are core competencies. Continued focus on maintaining and improving a healthy safety culture.

  • Demonstrated effectiveness in listening, verbal, and written communication skills encompassing senior management, peers, and throughout the local site.

  • Proven decision making capabilities, knowing when to demand data prior to making a decision and when urgency of decision trumps availability of all desired inputs.

  • Knowledge and experience in applying core CI tools such as Lean and Six Sigma in a practical and impactful manner.

  • A highly desired skillset is the ability to understand business and non-operational challenges and opportunities, identify possible trade-off solutions, and collaborate on solutions that best serve the needs of the business.

  • Ability to operate effectively within a matrix managed environment.

  • Demonstrates understanding of key local and global regulations affecting the business and assures compliance with those regulations

  • Drive for consistent quality, manufacturing cost reduction in-house and at contract manufacturers.

  • Always balance the business goals versus operational goals.

  • The customer centric, holistic manufacturing process delivers in an effective way the systems configuration, as expected by the customer.

  • Fluent German and English language skills

Education / Experience Requirements

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor or equivalent college degree, preferably in an Engineering discipline. The ideal candidate will have an Advanced / Masters level degree with focus on Operations or Business

  • Minimum of 8-10 years manufacturing experience which ideally spans multiple functions and levels within the segment, with at least 5 years managing people and 3 or more years managing “managers” of people in a 200+ people organization

  • Solid understanding of manufacturing of complex capital equipment.
