Job Description / Information

This role directs and manages the Legal Operations function and is responsible for outside counsel management, with a particular focus on service rate agreements, e-billing and matter management, as well as serving as the lead global Legal & Compliance department finance manager.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee, develop and implement processes, policies, and procedures related to billing guidelines, matter workflow, and corporate wide initiatives.

  • Collaborate and communicate with colleagues and senior leadership regarding process, policies, reporting, and industry trends.

  • Represent the department at meetings with the Indirect Procurement Team.

  • Provide direction, data, and analysis for the departmentexpense segment of the Cost Transformation for Growth (CTG) program.

  • Source department cost reduction opportunities and drive cost reduction initiatives

  • Identify, collect, and report (regularly and/or on an ad hoc basis) on key performance indicators and metrics across divisions to department leaders.

  • Negotiate U.S. and international rate agreement terms with outside counsel and legal vendors, such as court reporting and e-discovery services.

  • Foster firm relationships, resolve billing disputes and non-compliance with Stryker’s guidelines.

  • Responsible for the recruitment, selection, training and on-going performance management of one or more direct employees.

  • Establish direction, manage, and provide leadership to the Legal Operations team servicing critical department functions such as case, claim and matter opening/closing, invoice & settlement processing, and systems integrity and administration.

  • Lead cross-functional projects directed at improving department operations, such as the rationalization of invoice payment and processing for legal services in the US and Europe.

  • Plan and execute projects according to deadlines and quality standards and within budget

  • Leverage technology solutions to create efficiency and improve operational effectiveness

  • Lead the department on all matters related to department cost centers (opex and capital funding)

  • Work with department leaders and finance partners to ensure actuals, forecasts, projections, budgets and strategic plans comply with corporate accounting policies and requirements, are delivered within corporate reporting deadlines and appropriately reflect department activity.

  • Develop analytical tools that allow department leaders to understand and provide direction on department spend, projections, and budgets.

  • Provide feedback on strategic planning and headcount projections and requests.

  • Perform related work as assigned by department leaders.

Minimum Qualifications

Educational Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree required (business / finance related course of study)

Advanced degree e.g., Masters in Business or certification e.g., Institute of Chartered Accountants, Certified Practicing Accountant, Certified Management Accountant desirable, but not required.

Other Qualifications and Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of applicable professional experience, with minimum of 2 years of people management and 2 years of law department/firm experience

Demonstrates proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite and corporate financial and management reporting systemsesirable but not required

Physical and Mental Requirements:

  • Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Generally involves sitting most of the time.

  • Must be able to operate common office equipment (e.g. computer, printer, copy machine, calculator, telephone, etc.).

  • Must be able to review printed and handwritten materials.
