The Chase Consumer and Community Banking (“CCB”) Regulatory, Operations and Controls Legal Team within the JPMC Legal Department was established to provide legal support to various CCB LOBs to achieve the goal of improving customer experience and bringing consistency and efficiency within a robust control environment.

The Legal Tax Team is a division within CCB Regulatory, Operations and Controls Legal Team. The attorney will be a member of the JPMorgan Chase Legal Department in the Consumer & Community Banking (“CCB”) group, and will support all of the CCB businesses. This position will report to the Legal Tax Team manager.

Responsibilities include providing legal advice and counsel to the various business and functional members of the CCB business and operations with respect to federal, state, and international tax information reporting and withholding, and sales and use tax obligations. The position is not related to the preparation of JPMorgan Chase’s corporate income tax returns. Candidates should be experienced tax counsel able to apply tax regulations, policy and industry developments to specific business initiatives and practices, interact with regulators as necessary, work with legal and non-legal staff concerning the tax treatment for a variety of transactional, corporate and commercial matters, and provide general tax advice and counsel to our business and operations colleagues. Previous experience in banking or with a large financial services company is desired, but not required.

The position requires an independent thinker who can take initiative, and have significant interaction with outside counsel, business partners, and Legal Department colleagues. The successful candidate will possess excellent communication and analytical skills, and have experience in resolving business disputes, experience specifically with federal and state tax information reporting (Form 1099, Form 1098, etc.) requirements or state sales and use tax requirements would be particularly relevant experience.


  • Provide legal advice and guidance in the interpretation of federal and state tax laws and regulations;

  • Partner with Corporate Tax on the interpretation of developments and changes in tax laws and regulations and be responsible for advising the CCB businesses as to the impact of any changes in laws or regulations impacting those businesses;

  • Work with the business to review procedures and policies;

  • Serve as a tax advisor and counsel to all CCB businesses and control partners, including the review of any new business initiatives, products or processes to determine tax implications;

  • Represent the CCB Tax Operations and Oversight group.

  • Work on specific identified tax projects in support of the CCB businesses; and

  • Help drive a culture of legal/regulatory risk awareness for tax matters within the CCB businesses.

Required Skills:

  • JD with at least four years of legal experience with increased responsibilities and challenges demonstrated over time

  • Attorney must be licensed to practice law and a member in good standing in the state/jurisdiction in which the position is based or otherwise in compliance with the in-house counsel registration rules of that state/jurisdiction

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Strong interpersonal skills and a team player who can collaborate effectively

  • Analytical thinker who is independent, a self-starter and flexible

  • Ability to work effectively and multitask successfully in fast-paced and complex business environment

Preferred Skills:

  • Background in Consumer Finance

  • LLM in Tax

  • Specific knowledge of tax information reporting and withholding requirements (domestic or international)

  • Specific knowledge of state sales and use tax regulations.

  • In-house experience a plus
