This position is located in the MAIN STORE, TAILOR SHOP, RETAIL DIVISION. The Candidate selected for this position will serve as a SEWING MACHINE OPERATOR LEADER for MCCS.
Leads the seamstresses in their daily duties. Assumes the duties of Alteration Shop when the incumbent of that position is absent. Sews and mends military dress uniforms. Operates sewing machine and blind stitch machine. Sews on new or replaces chevrons, buttons, zippers and NCO stripes. Rips open seams with sharp knife or instrument to facilitate sewing. Uses a steam press or an iron to press seams open or take wrinkles out prior to sewing. Maintains a running inventory on all sewing supplies within the Alteration Shop.
Provides World Class Customer Service with an emphasis on courtesy. Assists customers and communicates positively in a friendly manner. Takes action to solve problems quickly. Alerts the higher-level supervisor, or proper point of contact for help when problems arise. Adheres to safety regulations and standards. Promptly reports any observed workplace hazards, and any injury, occupational illness, and/or property damage resulting from workplace mishaps to the immediate supervisor. Adheres to established standards of actively supporting the principles of the EEO program and prevention of sexual harassment.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Ability to operate a power sewing machine, eyelet machine, regular sewing machine or blind stitch machine. Must know how to perform preventative maintenance on equipment used. Ability to use a steam press, puff iron when altering military uniforms. The proper placement of arm patches, cloth grade or rank insignias, soft or hard shoulder boards and NCO stripes on trousers. Must have knowledge of how articles are sewn and have the ability to re-sew ripped articles back to original condition. Ability to read tailor’s marks for increasing or decreasing the uniform in size. Must be able to communicate with other seamstresses in asking for instructions or instructing them in the right way of performing alterations. Must have patience to endure long hours in a sitting position. Must possess dexterity and maintain alertness and concentrated attention when working around power driven sewing machine. Must use good judgment and ingenuity when planning or laying out work.
Responsible for planning and laying out of work for the Alterations Shop. Responsible for training other employees in the proper sewing and altering techniques. Responsible for the Alteration Shop in the absence of the Alteration Shop. Work is performed with considerable independence. Some technical areas will receive specific instructions. The incumbent will not deviate from the technical instruction without authority of the supervisor.
Work may require sitting for long periods of time with continued movement of the hands, arms and fingers in placing items in position for sewing. Work may require some standing and bending. The incumbent should have 20/20 vision or be correctable with appropriate devices. Some precision repairs may cause eye strain. Lifts and carries objects up to 45 lbs independently and objects over 45 lbs with assistance.
Work is performed in a well lighter room. Area is often noisy. Subject to possible needle puncture or minor thread cuts.
