The Boiler Plant Operator is located in the General Utilities Section of Facilities Engineering Service and is under the supervision of the Maintenance Foreman of the Section. The incumbent is responsible for duties in the Medical Center's Boiler Plant including the overhaul, repair, installation, etc. of boilers, chemical pumps air pollution devices, transformers and electrical circuits, steam lines, and all other items necessary to constitute a complete energy producing facility. The incumbent correctly identifies and uses appropriate tools in boiler plant operation. The incumbent must have a thorough knowledge of boiler plant operation including involvement with high pressure equipment, chemical analysis, and boiler plant control. The incumbent must also have experience in plant shutdown and must be able to fit into very tight places (ex: a 16''x16'' opening).
Work Schedule: The Boiler Plant Operator must be able to work any of three (3) shifts scheduled for any five (5) of the seven (7) day week on a rotating basis; must be available for call-back to fulfill any emergency needs or to fill in for absent co-workers.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and you have the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills and abilities) in the following areas:
- Ability to do the work of a Boiler Plant Operator without more than normal supervision (Screen Out Element)
- Knowledge of Boiler Plant Operation and Technical Practices
- Ability to Interpret Technical Instructions
- Knowledge of Measuring Instruments and Their Use
- Ability to Troubleshoot, Maintain, and Repair Boiler Plant Equipment
- Dexterity and Safety in the Use of Hand and Power Tools
Screen-Out Element: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the questions. The screen-out element for this position is ability to do the work of a boiler plant operator without more than normal supervision.
Physical Effort: The operator must be able to climb ladders, reach and work on overhead surfaces, bend, kneel, crouch, and stand. The duties require the individual to be on their feet 95% of the work day. Must be able to lift and carry eighty (80) pounds of chemicals.
Heavy lifting (45 pounds and over); heavy carrying (45 pounds and over); reaching over shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (4) hours; standing ( 1 1/2 hours); crawling ( 1/2 hour); kneeling (1/2 hour); repeated bending (1 hour); climbing, legs only (1/2 hour); climbing use of legs and arms; both legs required; operation of loader; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and to 20/40 in the other; both eyes required; depth perception; hearing (aid permitted); must be able to crawl through openings 16''x16''.
Working Conditions: The operator is subject to burns from steam lines, falls, cuts and bruises encountered by the use of various tools and limited working space. Noise is a constant and ever present factor which applicant must tolerate.
