United Airlines Analyst - Statistics and Operations Research in Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Provides mathematical modeling and analysis services to support critical financial, operational, and/or strategic planning decisions and engages in supporting project teams in value added activities that generate practical solutions to complex business problems, explores new business alternatives, and drives improvement in business decisions.

Responsibilities

Develops the approach and methods to define and solve management problems through quantitative analysis and analytical models, using operations research, statistics, machine learning, forecasting techniques and structured programming languages. Provides on-going analytical services to client organizations. Duties include:

  • Develops data requirements, and queries

  • Develops system and process understanding

  • Conducts basic analysis (Paretos, basic stats, correlations, linear regressions, hypothesis testing)

  • Learns and applies any basic or advanced analytical method to solve a business problem

  • Applies profound technical concepts to make otherwise unsolvable problems tractable

  • Interprets results, develops business insights from analysis, and defines next steps

  • Demonstrates proficiency/experience with structured programming languages (e.g. C++, SAS, R, Python) and/or simulation and BI tools (such as Simio, Spotfire, Tableau)

  • Suggests innovative ideas and solutions proactively

  • Provides updates appropriate for layman and/or manager

  • Engages with business and working team

  • Develops a good understanding of each project and impact on the core business

  • Demonstrates active listening skills

Education

Required

  • MS in Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Decision Science, or Industrial Engineering, or related discipline involving quantitative analysis

OR

  • Bachelors in Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Decision Science, or Industrial Engineering, or related discipline involving quantitative analysis, or related discipline involving quantitative analysis, and 1.5 years of experience in Operations Research or related field involving solving complex business problems or applying statistical methods required

Knowledge/Skills

Required

  • Coursework or work experience with mathematical programming for large complex optimization problems, or probability/ forecasting techniques working on big data

  • Coursework or work experience in model prototyping through use of either optimization toolkit(s) including CPLEX, AMPL, or OPL, or statistical/machine learning package(s) including SAS or SPSS, Minitab and/or BI tools (such as Spotfire, Tableau)

  • Coursework or work experience with C, C++, Java, or other structured programming languages,such as Python

  • Good business, technical, verbal/written communication, and presentation skills

  • Adaptability to changing business environment

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to interact with clients

Preferred

  • Knowledge of United/Industry data sources

Experience

Required

  • If Bachelors, 1.5 years of experience in Operations Research or related field involving solving complex business problems or applying statistical methods

Preferred

  • 1.5 years of professional experience in analytical field involving solving complex business problems or applying statistical methods

  • 1+ years of airline business experience. Demonstrated ability to create business value

Other

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship

  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification

  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
