Laboratory - Technical Consultant - CLIA

We are seeking a Technical Operations Supervisor to support our new, state of the art laboratory. This lab is slated to test over 4 million samples annually. Reporting into the Laboratory Technical Operations Manager, you will have responsibility for Technical

Consultant tasks, as defined by CLIA, in OPI plasma centers. The Technical Operations Supervisor must provide oversight for the following, as it pertains to the Red Blood Cell Immunization (RBC) program: donor recruiting and retention, Standard Operating Procedure

(SOP) development, donor immunization, and employee training.

Additional responsibilities of the Technical Operations Supervisor role include:

  • Perform onsite and remote evaluation of testing staff competency including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Direct observation of donor testing performance, including donor preparation, sample handling, and testing.

  • Monitoring the recording and reporting of test results.

  • Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results, and preventive maintenance and function checks.

  • Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks

  • Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing samples or external proficiency testing samples;

  • Assessment of problem solving skills.

  • Evaluate and document the performance of individuals responsible for moderate complexity testing.

  • Identify training needs and assures each individual performing tests receives training and meets the education requirements appropriate for the types and complexity of the laboratory services performed in the plasma center.

  • Develop and implement corrective actions in response to CLIA inspection findings in OPI plasma centers.

  • Provide on-site, telephone, or electronic technical consultation to the plasma centers.

  • Lead the selection of test methods appropriate for the clinical use of the test results.

  • Establish a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishing the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained through the entire testing process from the initial receipt

of the specimen, through sample analysis and reporting of test results.

  • Resolve technical problems and ensures remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.

  • Supervise the Red Blood Cell Immunization program for participating OPI plasma centers including:

  • Develop or revise and implement SOPs, as necessary.

  • Review lab results to identify potential new donors for the RBC and whole blood programs.

  • Provide input to the Marketing department in order to develop a strategy for donor recruitment and retention.

  • Coordinate and deliver employee training, as needed, for the management of a RBC program in a plasma center.

  • Forecast production and coordinate Anti-D Source plasma shipments to meet customer specifications.

  • Analyze donor titer test results to ensure the immunization schedule and strategy are appropriate for the initiation of a timely immune response in donors.

Job Requirements

Qualified candidates of this role must offer a Bachelor’s degree in chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology. You must offer strong organizational skills, attention to detail and excellent interpersonal skills.

Other requirements of the Technical Operations Supervisor role include:

  • 2+ years of laboratory training or experience in non-waived testing in the designated specialty/subspecialty of responsibility.

  • MT (ASCP certification) with two years of clinical or blood banking experience preferred.

  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated project management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.

  • Intermediate MS Word and Excel skills.

  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to travel 30% of time, as needed.
