We are continuously harnessing new scientific knowledge and technologies to design safe and effective single-entity and combination vaccines against complex diseases for the world’s population.This newly-created position has been established to primarily oversee day-to-day management and execution of early stage next generation influenza vaccine research and contribute to the strategic planning, design, and management research activities in Cambridge, MA. The candidate will be responsible for establishing processes and procedures applicable in a highly focused biotech environment and to oversee diverse R&D operations to develop early-stage broadly protective influenza vaccine (BPIV) leads. This includes coordinating teams to execute pre-clinical through early stage clinical studies and fiscal responsibility. The Senior Director of BPIV Operations will work in coordination with the Global Project Leader and Senior Leadership to ensure the unit is implementing the activities to support overall project strategy. It is expected the candidate has a demonstrated track record or an experienced and efficient leader. The candidate should have excellent people skills, business acumen and exemplary work ethics.The position will reside within a biotech-like unit within Sanofi Pasteur R&D. The As BPIV has not entered into the clinic yet, novel, creative areas of preclinical and clinical research and development are deemed necessary to complement our already successful and proven pipeline and portfolio of influenza vaccines. The candidate should feel comfortable between the translational science space between discovery and proof of concept Phase 1/2 clinical trials. Duties: The primary responsibilities for this position are:

  • Oversees daily operations of the BPIV unit and helps develop operating plan objectives that support BPIV R&D strategies.

  • Formulates and recommends BPIV R&D efforts to maximize efficiency, workflow, and reduce costs.

  • Is responsible for improving productivity of operations, and facilitating cross-team interactions

  • Exercises authority to implement and initiate operational activities to support projects.

  • Oversees BPIV R&D schedules, materials, equipment and staff requirements.

  • Provides leadership in solving complex operational problems.

  • Coordinate the sustainability strategies of BPIV designs

  • Participates with senior management in developing and establishing organizational structure and requirements

  • Be a contributing member of the BPIV biotech unit

  • Timely and accurate accomplishment of key project milestones

  • Work with the Global Project Team and Global Project Leader

  • Foster a corporate culture that promotes ethical practices, customer focus and service and encourages individual integrity;

  • With respect to operational matters, ensure communications, resolution of issues and project development

  • Participate actively in process improvement and other initiatives

  • Interact with members of the Global Program/Project Teams and other internal members in a positive and collaborative manner Performance Expectations: Performance expectations in the first year include:

  • Assimilate into the BPIV biotech unit and the BPIV project team as the Cambridge operations leader to implement preclinical studies and materials for the broadly protective influenza vaccine project.

  • Ensure that project timelines and milestones are met

  • Contribute to the strategy for preclinical and clinical proof of concept and advanced development of BPIV

  • Contribute to the internal distribution and communication of preclinical data

  • Masters or PhD degree in Biotechnology or medical discipline.

Specific Skills & Experience:

  • At least 10 years relevant experience.

  • Experience in biotech and pharmaceutical industries. Experience in taking candidate products from bench to bedside and back in an iterative translational manner

  • Outstanding leadership, organization and coordination skills.

  • Working knowledge with Agile-type project management a plus

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Familiarity with IND submission process and specifically with vaccines and biologics as a plus

  • Vaccine, immunology and influenza experience would be an advantage.
