National Grid Graduate Development Program - Associate Supervisor, LNG Operations in Brooklyn, New York

About the Graduate Development Program:

National Grid’s Graduate Development Program (GDP) is the company’s flagship pipeline program, targeting recent college graduates joining the company in entry-level full time positions. The GDP is designed to prepare early career professionals for future leadership roles within the organization, aims to support Graduates in developing as leaders, guide their career, and increase their business talents and skills. It provides opportunities for Graduates to explore a broad range of disciplines across our functions and locations, work on a variety of projects, and expand their network.

Graduates start their careers at National Grid with an 8-week Orientation. Graduates will spend time learning the core functions of the business, networking with our Executive team, and traveling to our different jurisdictional areas. By the end of Orientation, Graduates have an in depth understanding of who National Grid is as a company and how we do business. They have also formed a network with their fellow Graduates as well assenior business leaders, key GDP stakeholders and GDP Alumni. Graduates also take part in quarterly development sessions with their cohort as well as complete a Capstone Project at the end of their first year with the company.



About the Position:

The role holder is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient operation and maintenance of LNG or LPG plant facilities through the supervision and organization of assigned operations personnel and contractors in order to effectively and efficiently accomplish job tasks in line with departmental and National Grid requirements.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to:)

  • Schedule plant shift personnel in order to provide timely, reliable, and efficient peak shaving requirements.

  • Direct activities to ensure proper and timely maintenance of plant facilities.

  • Supervise a culturally diverse workforce through coaching, counseling and team building to ensure tasks are carried out in an efficient manner.

  • Oversee the operational workload of team; ensuring allocated staff are fully utilized in order to deliver against agreed program of work.

  • Communicate maintenance, operating and training information as well as changes to procedures and plant equipment to the Production Coordinator and others as necessary in order to ensure that records are contemporary and accurate.

  • Ensure supervised team comply with safety standards, policies and processes in order to ensure a safe working environment and minimize risk for all staff.

  • Maintain compliance with relevant regulations by providing up to date information on National Grid policies, processes and programs to regulatory bodies.

  • Promote and implement procedural best practice within the team in order to ensure all working practices are compliant with National Grid policies and regulatory requirements.

  • Monitor and challenge business processes where appropriate in order to ensure National Grid is compliant with regulatory requirements.

  • Become proficient in the applicable layers of the Process Safety Management (PSM) system relative to LNG Operations by attending and satisfactorily completing assigned training programs such as PHA, LOPA and etc.

  • Effectively implement the following as part of PSM system at each LNG plant;

  • The 12 company Process Safety Risk Control Standards.

  • Various layers of Process Hazard Analysis (PHA) as required.

  • Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA) and the action items as required.

  • Promote the Process Safety values to all plant employees and contractors.

  • Process Safety Key Performance Indicator process at the plant level.

  • Plant personnel participation in competency training modules arranged by the Process Safety Group and LNG Operations.

  • Work with other Process Safety Groups who are knowledgeable in this function to enhance the LNG plant’s Process Safety management System.

  • Other specific process safety related competencies as defined for your roles and responsibilities in the Company’s US Process Safety Competency Management system.

  • Application of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) relative to LNG plant instrumentation systems.

  • Application of Management of Change (MOC) process relative to modifications and upgrades at LNG plants.

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree from an accredited institution in Engineering

  • Concentration in academic studies relevant to one of the career paths

  • Graduated between May 2017 and May 2018

  • Earned a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher; official college transcript required for confirmation

  • Demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills

  • Preference given to candidates with relevant internship experiences

  • Ability to begin the National Grid Graduate Program June 4, 2018

  • Valid driver’s license with safe driving history

  • Proven leadership experience in at least/one/of the following:

o College leadership position (e.g., student government, clubs, athletics).

o Leadership and/or volunteer experience, in and/or out of the college environment

o Experienced a full or part-time job while at college and acquired relevant work experience

  • Technically proficient within LNG operations and regulations with experience of leading a team involved in operational services.

  • Thorough knowledge of LNG regulations including Federal DOT LNG CFR 193 and NFPA 59A is desirable.

  • Must have a good working knowledge of tools and systems within LNG plant operations.

  • Must have experience managing a team with the ability to build effective, respectful, working relationships.

  • Understands the importance of plant operations procedures and standards of working and demonstrates the ability to give directions or demonstrations with clear reasons and rationales.

  • Requires the ability to think from first principles and demonstrates ability to challenge operations processes and use knowledge or trends to look at current situations or problems.

  • Has the ability to understand and identify training or developmental needs of plant staff and design and establish new programs of work to support them.

  • Able to coach, motivate and lead a team of operating and maintenance personnel and increase their capabilities.
