General Function:

Assists the store director in overseeing the store and acts on issues in the absence of the director.

Reporting Relations:

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director

Direct Reports: Assistant Manager; Store Operations/Perishable/GM, Assistant Managers, 2nd Assistant Managers, Department Managers, Accounting Coordinator, Product Manager & Specialists

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a positive attitude; creates an atmosphere of friendliness and fun through flexibility and teamwork. Generates a friendly atmosphere by encouraging employees to greet and speak to customers; providing prompt, courteous, and efficient service to customers and sets a good example.

  • Provides prompt, efficient and friendly customer service by exhibiting caring, concern and patience in all customer interactions and treating customers as the most important people in the store.

  • Smiles and greets customers in a friendly manner, whether the encounter takes place in the employee's designated department or elsewhere in the store.

  • Makes an effort to learn customers' names and to address them by name whenever possible.

  • Assists customers by: (examples include)

  • escorting them to the products they're looking for

  • securing products that are out of reach

  • loading or unloading heavy items

  • making note of and passing along customer suggestions or requests

  • performing other tasks in every way possible to enhance the shopping experience.

  • Answers the telephone promptly and provides friendly, helpful service to customers who call.

  • Responsible for perpetuating the fundamental values of the Hy-Vee culture. This involves: honesty; integrity; friendliness, and caring for customers and employees; demonstrates sincerity, respect, and high levels of ethics and morals; dedicated to proving the best products and values; shares information; being fair in how customers, suppliers and employees are treated; demonstrates good manners; shows dignity; and is involved in helping the company improve and grow.

  • Assists the store director in overseeing the store and acts on issues in the absence of the director.

  • Ensures food safety guidelines are followed and complies with the person-in-charge sanitation training as determined by the governmental regulatory agencies.

  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local health and food safety regulations for the store.

  • Conducts Food Safety & Quality Assurance internal inspections to ensure food safety practices.

  • Takes corrective actions as necessary.

  • Provides food safety training for all employees within the store and ensures all employees complete the Hy-Vee On-Line Food Safety Training.

  • Maintains status as a Certified Food Safety Manager.

  • Assists in coordinating all product recall events.

  • Manager perishables assumes duties as lead person in all food safety issues at store level.

  • Forecasts and reviews (may write) the store labor schedule within the store director's guidelines.

  • Recruits, interviews, selects, orientates, and trains new employees.

  • Ensures proper training, handles employee issues, and coordinates disciplinary procedures when necessary.

  • Provides leadership in actively pursuing sales goals with increased sales and profitability.

  • Uses and understands all hardware and software technology in the store.

  • Works with department heads and other designated personnel regarding schedules, labor issues, product purchasing, and merchandising to meet their specific goals.

  • Monitors expenses and recommends cost reduction programs.

  • Coordinates the actual physical inventory for the store, verifies the accuracy of the information and puts together the P & L as requested by the store director.

  • Determines location of ad and promotional displays, ensures product quality and quantities to meet customer and store demands and profitability. Meets with sales reps and determines new items, special purchases, and determines prices and merchandises the product.

  • Coordinates and/or assists in the performance evaluation process and reviews all employees (at least annually).

  • Oversees building/ground maintenance and all store sanitation to ensure they meet with the store director's guidelines.

  • Attends company meetings as requested (may require an overnight stay) and disseminates the information to store level employees.

  • Responsible for and attends companywide events, special store events, store meetings as directed and is involved in community activities.

  • Oversees cash accountability, accounting procedures, audits to ensure compliance, and investigates potential problems.

  • Adheres to all company policies and individual store guidelines.

  • Reports to work when scheduled and works expected number of hours.

Secondary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Completes required in-store department training, on-line training, testing, as well as the Dale Carnegie Basic class (as required by the store director).

  • Ensures safety procedures to provide a safe and healthy work environment for employees and customers.

  • Pursues retail educational opportunities and continuing education whenever possible.

  • Assists in all areas of the stores as needed.

  • Provides continuous education for existing store employees regarding new and updated company and store policies, procedures, and job duties.

  • Responsible for checking of competitors pricing as requested by store director.

  • Explains store services to potential personal and business account customers to generate additional business for the store.

  • Assists with replenishing product and designs and constructs displays.

  • Performs other job related duties and special projects as required.

Education and Experience:

High School or equivalent experience. One or more years of retail management experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to physically perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.

  • Visual requirements include clarity of vision at distance of less than 20 inches and more than 20 feet with or without correction, depth perception, and field of vision.

  • The following physical activities are necessary to perform this job: Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Worker Characteristics:

  • Must have the ability to use logical or scientific thinking to solve problems and several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Must have the ability to do arithmetic, Algebraic and Geometric calculations.

  • Must be able to report, write, or edit articles for publication; prepare and deliver presentations; interview, counsel or advise people; evaluate technical data.

Working Conditions:

This position is exposed to dust, noise, and temperature extremes. There are possible equipment movement hazards; electrical shock, and exposure to chemicals and solvents. This is a fast paced work environment.

Equipment Used to Perform Job:

Pallet jack, box cutter, cash registers, knives, department power equipment, trash compactor, cardboard baler, fork lift, computer, calculator, telephone, FAX machine, two wheeler, register computer, delivery vehicle, ordering machine.

Financial Responsibility:

Authorized to purchase merchandise and supplies and order repairs on equipment.

Contacts:

Has daily contact with customers, employees, suppliers/vendors, and the general public. Has occasional contact with federal or state regulatory agencies regarding inspections.

Has access to confidential information including salaries/wages of employees, employee files, and sales and profit information.
