**Position will be regular status and include benefits. However, selected candidate will be required to sign a letter of understanding that he or she may be laid off when the city employee on FMLA leave returns and if no suitable vacancy exists.**

JOB SUMMARY--- An employee in this job classification performs a wide variety of skilled and semi-skilled work as well as manual labor tasks related to street construction, street maintenance, sanitation operations, or sign shop operations as assigned. Employee may operate a wide variety of light, medium, and heavy equipment involved in complex and difficult street construction and maintenance activities or in automated refuse collection and recycling operations. The Equipment Operator will have a regular assignment to Street or Sanitation but can be re-assigned to either group if needed to fill short term needs. Work is performed in accordance with standard operating procedures under the general supervision of a designated crew leader or Supervisor who reviews work for quality and results. Duties include but are not limited to operating equipment safely and efficiently, and cleaning, maintaining, servicing, and repairing the equipment. Maintains positive public relations and insures high service level. Attends training and educational programs. Assists in other departmental areas as needed. Must be able to work autonomously and to exercise a high degree of initiative and independent judgment and discretion.

Job requirements include but are not limited to the following: Education, Required Certifications, and Licenses: HS Diploma or GED. 18 yrs or older. Completion of one year of technical school with emphasis in Engineering, Maintenance technology, construction, or related field a plus. Valid AL Driver's license. Class A or B CDL license depending on designation as Operator I, II, or III. Must possess appropriate endorsements, including air brake endorsement if applicable. Evidence of a safe driving history and ability to be insured under City's general liability insurance. Certification in CPR and First Aid.
