Begin your career in public service with the City of Asheville's Public Works Department! The City of Asheville is seeking TWO (2) full-time Equipment Operators to join the Sanitation Division. The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy motorized equipment.

Selected candidates will have the opportunity to obtain their CDL license on the job and paid for by the City of Asheville. This position offers a variety of on the job training experiences and professional development opportunities. The Public Works Department is supportive of employee development and advancement. Work Schedule: Full Time 40 Hrs Week; Monday -Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM

Examples of Duties

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates a variety of heavy motorized equipment involved in the sanitation industry to include automated side loader refuse, rear packer trash collection truck, knuclebooms and other various equipment as needed, etc.

  • Drives trucks along specified routes to collect and transport refuse and debris; drives trucks as needed in various capacities as needed in the Public Works Department

  • Performs routine preventive maintenance on equipment, such as checking and filling fluid levels and greasing as necessary.

  • Inspects equipment daily and reports need for repairs; assists in repair work.

  • Performs a variety of manual or semi-skilled labor when needed for the Sanitation Division and Public Works Department.

Additional Job Functions:

  • Trains less-experienced Motor Equipment Operators in operation of various types of equipment as workload and time permit.

  • Performs all positional work functions in the Sanitation Division as needed.

  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalency, with some relevant experience with operating motorized equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

Licensing and Certifications:

  • Class B CDL License by State of North Carolina or ability to obtain license within three months of hire date.

  • Prefer experience driving a rear packer or solid waste collection trucks. Ability to lift heavy loads.

  • Ability to learn routes and navigate in the City of Asheville.

Must successfully complete a physical per the Federal Motor Carrier Administration Medical Exam for Fitness Determination which includes a hearing test. A position requiring a CDL license also requires a separate urine drug screen through the National Transportation Association in addition to the new employee drug screen.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of motorized equipment with an emphasis on Sanitation Division equipment.

  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards related to the job, and the proper safety precautions and equipment used in the safe performance of job duties.

  • Working knowledge, in some job assignments, of the practices and procedures involved in tree maintenance and removal, and pest management

Skills:

  • Ability to use of multiple types of motorized heavy equipment.

  • Ability to use a variety of power and hand tools as needed.

  • Ability to make minor repairs and operating adjustments to assigned equipment with an emphasis on Sanitation Division equipment.

  • Ability to follow oral instructions.

  • Ability to instruct less-experienced personnel in operation of heavy motorized equipment with an emphasis on Sanitation Division equipment.

  • Ability to work effectively under arduous or unpleasant working conditions

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.
