About T&D:

Southern California Edison’s (SCE's) Transmission and Distribution Organizational Unit (T & D) is responsible for planning, engineering, constructing, operating, and maintaining transmission and distribution facilities throughout the 50,000-square-mile territory. T&D is the steward of roughly $19 billion in assets that safely and reliably deliver electricity to 14 million residents via SCE’s 5 million customer accounts.

Position overview :

The successful candidate will work in the SCE Grid Control Center on a team with a lead power system operations specialist with the collective responsibility for ensuring SCE electrical system reliability. To ensure reliable operations, the candidate will monitor the system using the Energy Management System and various related applications and provide functional direction to SCE substation system operators.

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Monitor interconnected system conditions, SCE and interconnected system line flows, voltages, Remedial Action Schemes and equipment limits during normal and emergency conditions.

  • Responsible for coordinating SCE normal and emergency operating actions with the ClSO, adjacent utilities and various internal and external agencies.

  • Take action or provide direction to enhance or re-establish system conditions to a reliable state in accordance with NERC, WECC, CISO and SCE operating protocols.

  • Has the authority and is responsible for initiating the curtailment of SCE load, either directly or at the direction of the ClSO, to maintain system reliability.

  • Responsible for the facilitation and tracking of system equipment outages adhering to established SCE and ClSO criteria.

  • Responsible for reviewing, comprehending, and applying operational policy and procedural changes in a time constrained atmosphere.

  • Perform internal and external notifications of system events in accordance with established requirements.

  • Participate in required internal and external training courses.

  • Perform other responsibilities and duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Must have four or more years' experience in electric system operations.

  • Must be willing to work rotating shifts with irregular hours and days off.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

Desired qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with Southern California Edison (SCE) bulk power transmission, subtransmission and distributions systems.

  • Demonstrated experience utilizing System Operating Bulletins and the SCE Accident Prevention Manual.

  • Demonstrated experience analyzing electric system operating conditions by utilizing advanced computer applications.

  • Demonstrated experience ensuring proper operational and procedural actions are taken in a time-constrained atmosphere.

  • Must have experience analyzing, evaluating, recommending and directing corrective actions during periods of system emergencies.

  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple problems simultaneously.

  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate with various parties.

  • Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to interface effectively and collaborate with clients, peers, management, and vendors to successfully meet shifting needs.

  • Must demonstrate effective results delivery, team building, and willingness to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

  • Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PC/Computing technologies and software.

  • Demonstrated experience with North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC), Western Electric Coordinating Council (WECC) and California Independent System Operator (ClSO) operating policies/practices/procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to make real-time decisions regarding operation of the electric system that may have a direct effect on system reliability or SCE as a corporation.

  • The candidate will be required to obtain NERC System Operator certification.

  • Proficiency in using the Energy Management System.

  • Thorough knowledge of CAISO and how it relates to the control area operation.

  • Certified NERC System Operator at the reliability coordinator level.

Comments:

  • Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work directly as employees for any employer in the United States without visa sponsorship.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position. Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.

  • Position will be on a 12-hour shift with rotating days off.

  • Additional testing may be required as part of the selection process for this position
